Correcting and explaining verses of Leyli and Majnun

Abstract

Jamal al-Din Abu Muhammad Ilyas ibn Yusuf, known as Nizami Ganjai, was an Iranian poet and storyteller in the 6th century AH, a pioneer of story-telling in Persian literature. Nizami composed the poem Leyli and Majnun in a six-part rhythm of Hazaj under the name of Shirvanshah Akhistan ibn Manouchehr. Despite all the efforts made in describing and correcting Nizami Ganjavi’s Leyli and Majnun to date, some verses of this poem still require explanation and review when we compare them with the ancient manuscripts of the text. Corrections made after Bertels’ research at the Soviet Union Academy and Vahid Dastgerdi’s descriptions and corrections have mostly republished their findings, as if some editors have merely repeated the exact recordings of their versions or, in some cases, have attempted to explain and justify their distant and incorrect readings based on their trust in them. In this article, we have examined sixteen instances of incorrect or incomplete recordings or explanations, or oversights and errors by the editors and commentators of Leyli and Majnun.
