Abstract

This research investigated the effect of analytical training of short contemporary Persian poems (works of Houshang Ebtehaj) on critical thinking and writing skills of eleventh-grade high school students. The research design was quasi-experimental with a control group and a pre-test/post-test design. Forty female eleventh-grade students were randomly divided into two groups: an experimental group (20 students) and a control group (20 students). The experimental group received training over six sessions using an analytical approach on Ebtehaj’s poems, while the control group received instruction through usual methods. The instruments for measuring critical thinking included the California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST), and for evaluating writing skills, a standard rubric was used. Additionally, a checklist and teacher’s journal were employed for qualitative observation.
Following the intervention, data were analyzed using independent samples t-test and paired samples t-test (significance level of 0.05). The results indicated that analytical poetry training had a significant positive effect on improving critical thinking and writing skills of students in the experimental group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). These findings emphasize the importance of analytical approaches in literature education for enhancing students’ cognitive and skill-based dimensions.
