A Semiotic Analysis of Discourses in the Works of Abdolhossein Zarrinkoub

Abstract

This study examines the discursive and semiotic dimensions of the works of Abdolhossein Zarrinkoub through an integrated framework combining Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe’s Discourse Theory with Yuri Lotman’s Cultural Semiotics. The main objective is to explore how meaning is constructed and reproduced in Zarrinkoub’s cultural, historical, and epistemological writings. Employing a qualitative discourse-analytical approach, the study identifies the central signifiers of selected texts and analyzes their relations through the concepts of equivalence and difference. It also investigates the interaction of texts and cultural systems within the Iranian semiosphere.

The findings reveal that Zarrinkoub reconstructs national and spiritual identity through the reinterpretation of myths and mystical traditions. In his historical writings, he redefines narratives of decline and resistance, presenting history as an active field of meaning-making. In the epistemological domain, he emphasizes the relationship between knowledge and human experience, thereby developing a reflective historical rationality. Overall, the study demonstrates that Zarrinkoub’s intellectual world is characterized by the continuous interaction of signs, texts, and discourses, through which cultural meanings are constantly reproduced, negotiated, and expanded.
